Stained Cement Pug
Having just painted one of these using opaque paints, I thought I would try one using the concrete stains which are somewhat translucent depending on how absorbent the cement is. It’s tricky stuff with no do overs. Once the brush touches the cement, that’s where it’s going, and if I have too much stain on the brush it’s prone to run off the brush and go willy-nilly wherever gravity takes it. I get one shot at it. I’m waiting for it to dry before I put the cement sealer on it. The sealer will make the colors richer and shine, but the stain in general gives it an almost glazed effect as if it was fired in a kiln.

The Statue of the Sitting Pug Progresses
After layering on the liquid latex morning and night, it was time to get the show on the road and cast the plaster cradle that holds the mold in place when filling it with cement. Here’s the process. The blue tape is so the plaster can be removed in sections and then later placed around the rubber mold when casting cement.
Pug Door Knocker
One of the members of a FB pug group asked me about a door knocker. I gave it some thought and this is what I came up with yesterday. It needs to be painted, of course, but I wanted to test it out before committing all the time to painting it. He’s very solid, and loud, a little louder than in the video.
The washer side of the hinge is cast inside the pug’s head.
